Great advice. Had a professor in undergrad cross out a sentence in my essay and write in the margin, in all caps, "PASSIVE VOICE BAD." It was the first time someone pointed out the issue to me. Never forgot it and I'm thankful for the lesson. Like you explain, though, passive voice has a place and can improve readability.
Also, academic writing has an obscene amount of passive voice. So I chuckle about that essay feedback when I think about it.
